Scientifically, the phenomenon of bioluminescence is not new – and well researched: microbes (bacteria) organic residues on food (nice of them) and give it the green light from smooth. Now a team of Philips Design Department under the project "Microbial Home" has been getting these insights with "organic light" into practice. One can see that is currently in the Dutch Design Week Eindhoven 2011.

Yokohama Marine Tower lit by Philips LED lights

Philips’ full color change and high-output LED floodlight “ColorReach Powercore” will add color and dream-like glamour to the reinvigorated Yokohama Marine Tower at night. In addition to the normal ColorReach Powercore installation, this year’s illumination will feature gleaming stars falling from the top of the tower through Philips’ LED fixtures on the frames. Philips’ “iColor Flex SLX” will be used for this LED installation. Its LED-based strand form generates unique and dynamic installations without the constraints of fixture shape or space. Each node can be independently controlled for desired lighting effects.

While your local hardware store may be urging you to convert incandescent lights in your home to compact fluorescent lighting, researchers are hard at work developing the next bright thing in lighting — LEDs. Earlier this fall, the first entry to the Department of Energy’s L Prize competition was submitted by Philips Electronics. The competition offers a ten million dollar cash prize for the development of a LED lightbulb that would replace the common 60-watt ‘Edison’ style incandescent light bulb and the PAR-38 halogen reflector-lamp bulb. The winning entry must meet certain requirements for durability, energy efficiency, and quality. We’ll talk with the manager of the DOE’s LED lighting program about the competition and the drive towards more efficient LED-based bulbs.

Today myself along fellow journalists and bloggers got a chance to get up close and personal the Philips Wake-Up Light. Most people may already be familiar with the Philips Wake-Up Light . It made its debut in Europe first and then launched stateside only a month ago with a new sleeker and more modern design. For those who aren’t familiar with the device it helps those gradually wake up by softly increasing the light for a more pleasant and re-energized way of starting your day.

Instead of just hitting the snooze or smacking your noisy alarm clock to shut it off. There are 20 different brightness settings that allow you to use it as a bedside lamp but mostly to let your rise in a soothing manner as the lamp gets brighter. There is also a Wake-Up Light with Dock for iPod that lets you rise to not only soft light, but your own tunes as well. There are 4 different nature sounds and an FM radio. The Dusk simulation helps you drift to sleep by softly fading out light and sound so you don’t see your entire day as you close your eyes. The Philips Wake-Up was inspired but a study that stated people enjoy waking up in the Summer rather than the winter. Especially those in Nordic countries were a sunny day isn’t always commonplace.
