LED-Powered Climate Dress Monitors Pollution

This incredibly designed dress will react to the air quality and pollution levels by pulsating hundreds of LED lights. This dress was created by Diffus. Hundreds of LEDs are woven into this dress, linked to a microprocessor and a carbon dioxide detection unit. It’s kind of amazing that it includes all of those LED lights. If the level of pollution increases around it, the lights start pulsating faster and faster, making a nifty air quality sensor.

While this concept may not be practical enough for mass production, we feel that environmentally conscious fashion like this is certainly progress in the right direction for the creative world. With LEDs and OLEDs becoming smaller and smaller, as well as more and more efficient, I wonder if we’ll see more of these lights integrated into clothing. Something like this certainly would impact our environmental awareness.

OLED Space Dress and LED Wedding Dress

Polymer-based OLED panels are super flexible and even suitable to be used to make dresses. UK’s PolyPhotonix has made an OLED dress, which it has flexible OLED panels and low-cost long-life solar cells to keep the dress lit up.

The OLED dress was exhibited at the launch of the the UK’s “Plastic Electronics Strategy’. PolyPhotonix’s production line is currently active for making polymer-based OLED lighting panels. They have used some OLED panels from their first production line to make the OLED dress.

Remember that lovely and interesting dress covered in wind-powered LEDs in the pattern of daisies? Well it seems that was just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to dresses that light up. These dresses can be added to the fashion show – one constructed of OLED panels and the other boasting 300 LEDs for a glowing wedding night. This dress has an incredible 300 LED bulbs embroidered into the skirt. They’re created by a company called Enlightened on a made-to-order basis. But 300 embroidered bulbs doesn’t make for very easy dry cleaning. Luckily they last ages and so perhaps this dress becomes an heirloom item that’ll light up for a daughter on her wedding day. If not…seems a bit of an e-waste for a dress worn on one day.

But LEDs on dresses may already be old news, considering OLEDs are the next big thing coming to market in lighting technology.

According to Photonics, the global market for printable electronics is forecast to grow to as much as $330 billion by 2027 and create up to 20,000 jobs in the UK. They state, “The largest growth in the sector is predicted to take place in the markets for rollable electronic display screens, ultraefficient lighting and low-cost, long-life solar cells.”

Wind-Sensitive LED Dandelion Dress Is Made For Pretty Night Fairies

Designed and developed by dutch designer Stijn Ossevoort, Flare is an electronic dress embroidered with wind sensitive dandelions. As the wind gently caresses the dress or if you “blow” on the dandelions themselves, a pattern of lights will twinkle across the dress. The LED flowers glow up gently when the wind or your breath touches them, causing much swooning and sighing in the process.

Well, everyone today seems to be fashion conscious and therefore, we choose to experiment with new outfits to express our fashion statement. As a matter of fact with fashion designers experimenting with new ideas and concepts, fashion fraternity has indeed come a long way. From traditional use of fabric, fashion has seen a transformation ever since designers came up with environmentally friendly and LED lights fitted garments. Keeping the trend, Turkish designer Hussein Cahalayan presented his very own creation of ‘Video Dress’ at the Milan Design Fair.

This unique dress has 15,600 LED lights fitted in its fabric that displays a time lapse of a rose opening and closing. Put on exhibition at Milan’s 10 Corso Como gallery, I am not very sure about how comfortable one would feel donning this high tech video dress. Well, have a look at this ‘glowing’ video dress and decide whether this dress is ‘Fashionable’ or ‘Too Techie’.

LED Galaxy Dress: The World’s Largest Wearable LED Display

Is the next big trend in fashion going to be geek chic? We recently saw computer-generated jewelry from Nervous System and data-driven jewelry from Plot Shop. Now Cute Circuit has introduced the LED Galaxy Dress–a blindingly bright piece of clothing that’s decked out with 24,000 full-color LEDs.

LEDs have certainly developed into a fashion accessory, and if you trust me, they are here to stay that way, providing the much needed sustainable support to the fashion world. If you were in a thought just otherwise, then take a look at this Galaxy Dress created with 24,000 LEDs by Cute Circuit, doesn’t this just sum up the glorification?

Striking as it can get, the Galaxy Dress is embedded with 24,000 LEDs that each measures only 2×2mm. If that’s just not much for the wordless glitter, the dress also carries 4,000 hand-applied Swarovski crystals in it composition. Drawing power for tiny iPod batteries which can keep the Dress glowing for an hour, a prototype of the Galaxy Dress is on exhibition at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry.
