tokyo-based designer hisakazu shimizu of sabo studio presents new works in the exhibition ‘fruits’, currently on display at vivid gallery in rotterdam. examining the universality of fruit, this series of objects recreates these borderless products of nature as domesticated, man-made housewares. the collection includes a range of pieces, from melon-shaped porcelain clocks to colorful glassblown LED lamps, that subtly suggest fruit with their spherical shapes and stem details.

the fruit LED lamp has a product closely related to nature, revised version of "pop." The exhibition, curated by Eizo Okada, includes a wide range of works, led lighting, kitchenware and watches. The Japanese designer Hisakazu Shimizu is a member of Canon’s in-house design team, including, the most famous works include products such as Canon IXUS digital camera. Shimizu also develops products with ‘Sabo Studio’ colored objects and a unique simplicity that often exceed the boundary between design and art. From his studio in Tokyo do these new results, able to attract the viewer like an apple in Eden.

the ‘holey chair’ is a LED light fixture constructed from white acrylic in the shape of a chair frame. Japanese designer takeshi miyakawa exhibited his ‘holey chair’. ‘asia now’ exhibition held at dwell on design in Los angeles in June 2010. LEDs embedded within illuminate the form. it can be placed on the floor or installed on the wall. takeshi miyakawa installation a ‘holey chair’ on a lamp post an illuminated ‘holey chair’ hanging from the street infrastructure. graphics which illustrated the current production of art, architecture and design in japan. various image panels covered the wall of the Japanese. available in two sizes: a larger version (14″ x 16″ x 28″) and smaller version (10 3/4″ x 12″ x 21″).

Japan’s Tranlogue Associates are experimenting with a very cool new (at least for us) lighting technology – surface emitting acrylic. Transparent like any other acrylic, but with the ability to radiate light from an invisible LED source. The designs are pretty amazing as well. Well done.

IDEA Dot LED Retro Alarm Clocks

Cool LED clocks keep popping up on the radar lately, and this week I came across these nifty round LED alarm clocks out of Japan. Designed for I.D.E.A., the clocks feature round LED pixel dots instead of traditional segments, and look great in either brilliant blue or green variants, they also come in traditional red if you prefer.

For those of you who don’t feel like setting your own time, the clocks feature automatic time-setting via radio broadcast signal. You can be found at online retailer Rakuten for it.

Dinosaurs are back to light up your home

Take home your own personal dinosaur and control each of its movements. With a new creation by Japanese company called Furniture Design Agra, now you can light up your home using a variety of dinosaur-shaped LED desk lamps. These modern dinosaurs are made up of stainless steel featuring LEDs in their head and spine, making them glow in different colors at your disposal via a remote control. The flexible joints let you position them differently to brighten up your surroundings with an unusual ambiance. The trendy Tyrannosaurus Rex is unfortunately available only in Japan presently in four surprisingly unique versions, priced between $100 and $270. The LEDSAURs add new light to the range of lighting objects with the dynamics of its shape and style. And they look pretty cool.
