american dean kamen inventor of the segway has released plans for a net zero energy island. located off the coast of conneticut, USA, north dumpling is a three acre island that kamen owns. over the past few years he has been transforming the island by utilising technologies for water purification and appliances that run on renewable energy. as of next year the island will be fully illuminated with LED lights produced by philips color kinetics, that is said to cut the power associated with lighting by 70 percent. according to LEDs magazine, upon switching to LED lighting, the island would achieve zero net energy. this means the electricity it uses is equivalent to, and hence is canceled by, the electricity it generates.

We wrote last week about a colorful LED installation on the streets of Paris that blew us away, today we’re inspired by Multiverse, a massive installation by American artist Leo Villareal that features approximately 41,000 LED nodes that run through a 200-foot-long tunnel in the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C..

As passerbyers move between the East and West buildings on an airport style people mover, the zillions of lights flicker on and off over head creating rhythmic patterns and abstract configurations. The custom designed software also has an element of chance built into it, so it’s unlikely that anyone will see the same routine twice. The project is Villareal’s largest and most ambitious work to date and will be on display through 2009.

We also came across this interesting interview with the artist discussing how he first got interested in working with light and how his art evolved from simple 1s and 0s to the incredibly complex and grand installations typical of his later pieces.

PATACHROMO, a brilliant installation by French artists Superbien, was based on the principles of CHROMOtherapy seen through the lense of PATAphysics . Presented as a succession of animated light frames lasting about 2 minutes each, the PATACHROMO program is provided as a tool for passers-by to face the grey Parisian winter weather with more serenity. How? According to the project page on Superbien’s website: "by exposing one’s chakras to the light diffused by the LED structure of the installation (covering a surface of 6.65 sq meters)."

We love the idea of walking down a dark and lonely Parisian street and stumbling upon this vibrant, fountain of color. And if nothing else, the imagery documenting the project is quite remarkable – it looks as though people are actually absorbing the colors as they pass by.

Created by two young Chilean architects and lighting designers, Ximena Munoz and Paulina Villalobos, the Anemix is a lighting system that creates unique 3D effects. Its a panel composed by a luminescent and a reflective layer, which can be modified to create a wide range of visual effects. It uses Osram LED technology to be the light source of this system, as its efficient, small and with a very low cost of maintenance. The glass-aluminum technology was developed by Glasstech, a specialized glazed Chilean company.

The Rundle Lantern is a parking garage in Adelaide, Australia, composed of a big corner-wrapping screen. Each of the 748 "pixels " has two LED lights behind it, and it can do all the stuff that awesome big screens can do. It was designed by brand consulting firm Fusion , but this is no jumbotron: it was intentionally designed to be a lantern to this part of town, and even though it moves it doesn't display hard images or text.
