Scientifically, the phenomenon of bioluminescence is not new – and well researched: microbes (bacteria) organic residues on food (nice of them) and give it the green light from smooth. Now a team of Philips Design Department under the project "Microbial Home" has been getting these insights with "organic light" into practice. One can see that is currently in the Dutch Design Week Eindhoven 2011.

"Organic light" for a suitable living and working environments, lighting fixtures from Blaskugeln is in a steel frame, supplied with nutrient solution through silicone tubes. It was approached by XDESIGN to develop and prototype a marketable product that represents specific educational and environmental goals through an augmented light fixture. Hand-blown Glass, Solar Panels, LEDs, Dirt and Plants, Below is a detailed excerpt from XDESIGN:

The GreenLight is a prescription product developed for the XDESIGN Environmental Health Clinic. The LED light is prescribed for Inpatients interested in changing their relationship to energy systems; improving indoor air-quality and developing experience with closed and coupled systems design-the chief strategies for improved environmental performance.

This LED lighting product diffuses light by coupling to photosynthetic processes. Planting strategies can be specified to address particular indoor air quality issues including VOC, benzene and formaldehyde removal.

The GreenLight was presented at Next Fest in LA.

LAPP-pro (light art performance photography) is the name given to an ongoing project by jan wallet and jorg miedza. the German duo create these colorful images by taking a slow exposure photograph of various light sources such as LED light and strobe lights. each piece is the result of a rehearsed performance – none of them are enhanced using additional software.
