the optical tone art project shows dynamic color LED light

Japanese designer tsutomu mutoh developed a software that controls the dynamic color of LEDs through a special algorithm to display RGB colors and has applied it to a series of lamps. instead of on/off switches, new controls by physical action (such as swinging or rotating) are implemented. tsutomu showed his work at the salone satellite 2010 in Milan. 4LED.com featured his work already in 2009 where he exhibited in the same place.

IN the optone, the original software controls the dynamic color of LEDs, as a computer works on digitized data from an input device, with the color output being numerically calculated. human beings perceive color as stimuli in lightness, hue and chroma. on the other hand, the color stimuli from output devices such as computer monitor or full-color LED are light which consist of red, green and blue done by an additive mixture color method. to control colors visually for human beings by computers, we must be sensitive to this discrepancy and find a new way to manipulate colors by numbers. let’s look into the three types of hue color circle (see above). the lowest one is called the Johannes itten’s 12-hue color circle in which yellow, red and blue are selected as primary colors and arranged to maintain the complementary characteristics diagonally. the uppermost one is called the HSB hue color circle in which red, green and blue are the primary colors and extended while maintaining numerical differences of the hue between colors as constant. the middle one is obtained from the optical tone algorithm which maintains the
complementary characteristics for diagonal colors and their lightness in a circle as constant. we choose a color model suitable for each design or art work, but be aware that on the HSB model, the hue difference is numerically constant but visually not constant, and the lightness is also not. Johannes itten’s model is visually proportional but numerical continuity is broken, and hard to manipulate by computers. the optical tone color model is designed visually proportional and still computational. because the optone is aimed to construct a relation between the light-source color and environmental object color by computer, I chose lightness primarily as most the important psychological stimuli to control colors, then arranged hue to maintain the complementary characteristics. the obtained algorithm makes possible a visually comfortable interaction with colors in real space.’

A bird LED lights

A moment. A little bird on a white pebble appears to care about nothing. This is a small ordinary scene and common moment in everyday life. I want to bring that moment into my space and revive the feeling/mood at that moment. The encounter of a little bird and my fingertips produces LED light.

The light then brings me peace and tranquillity. A bird. A pebble. Tranquil light.

LED light incense

have you ever seen softly spreading scent from art incense? People generally think that the effect of smell can be given off by an incense burning.

However at the tip of an incense there also exists light caused by the burning. If this light caused by the burning could be slowed down and kept active for 10 minutes. it could have another meaning for us. An incense which used to delicately fill the room with smell, can now softly fill the room with smell, can now softly fill the room with light. Through this a new method of LED lighting display can be created. Many incense shaped light-sticks can be placed in the incense base to serve together as a mood light or each incense shaped LED light-stick can be individually removed and utilized as a softly lit mood light.

Incense shaped LED light-sticks are placed in the incense base. The incense base mainly acts as a battery charger for the incense shaped LED light-sticks. And, if several incense shaped LED light-sticks are gathered they can be used as a mood light. After removing an incense shaped LED light-stick from the incense base and if tapped lightly on the ground the end of the incense shaped light-stick LED lights up like a real burning incense stick.

If used in a home, the base would be placed in the living room and each room would have a small stand so that when one goes to the room they could take an incense shaped LED light-stick and place it on the stand. Several incense shaped LED light-sticks can be placed on the stand to create the desired amount of lighting.

An accessible political piece, Peacemaker boldly hangs on the wall both threatening and beautiful.

Levitating wirelessly powered LED lightbulb

light bulb is a levitating yet powered LED lightbulb. It will float stably in midair and remain on for years without any physical contact, charging, or batteries. With the levitation and wireless power circuitry both on, this entire package still consumes less than half the power of an incandescent bulb.

This is not a trick or a photoshop manipulation. The bulb and the casing contain hidden circuitry shown in figures that uses electromagnetic feedback to levitate the bulb roughly 2.5″ from the nearest object, and uses coupled resonant wireless power transfer to beam power from the housing into the bulb itself. Tesla invented wireless power transfer in the late 1890′s. However this effect is still largely underutilized. I wanted to explore this effect coupled with feedback stabilization of a naturally unstable object. Details in the figures highlight the embedded circuitry and techniques used to levitate and power the LED light bulb.
