concentricity interactive LED light series

concentricity is an interactive light sculpture series by joshua kirsch. consisting of three individual pieces – concentricity 96, 80, 16 – each one presents an illuminated white LED handle in which a viewer is invited to move in any desired direction. reed switches located within the sculpture’s circuitry sense the movements of a magnet that is contained in each of the sculpture’s handles, translating this information into the form of LED light.

No Shadow LED Man

He’s the invisible man/ count the bubbles in your hand/ the summer sites/ and the southern skies. That’s all that’s left behind/ the skies, and a sweet caress/ he’s the invisible man/ catch him if you can. This is The Man with No Shadow, a LED-based sculpture of a full size man by Makoto Tojiki. I like these kind of art, perhaps because it reminds me of the first primitive 3D dot renderings, back when there were no Gouraud or even flat shaders.

The Man With No Shadow by Makoto Tojiki is a life-sized LED light sculpture of a man that welcomed visitors to Tojiki’s stand at SaloneSatellite. The Man was just one of some very interesting lighting projects by Tojiki. Tobias Franzel also got a lot of attention by challenging passersby to a quick game of ping-pong. Franzel is the designer of a door that flips into a ping-pong table for two players. Birds on a wire are a common outdoor scene, so why not put them to work on a clothesline? Angelo is a bird-shaped clothespin by Valentina Frosini. And students from the product design department of the University of Lincoln had a solid variety of work at their stand, including some sharp laser cut clock towers.

Inspiring Celestial Suspension LED Lights

There’s just something magical about having suspended ceiling lights arranged like constellations. We just love how these lights look. Hopefully, by looking at these, you’ll find some new ways of arranging your own lights. These lights are by Bastien Carre and are part of his Celeste collection. Carre uses LED lights as his main material to make these starry lights. They are perfect for this type of lighting. They have a great lifetime, need little electricity and enabled him to make his lights extremely light. Most of his pieces are limited production as they take a lot of hours to complete.

Carré was also able to make the electrical wiring almost invisible, completing the illusion of these celestial lights. His lights are entirely handmade and usually need to be soldered one LED at a time, often times there are hundreds of LEDs in one piece. These lights are part of an exhibit at the Imagine gallery in Nîmes, France. We think that these lights are great and that it should be not that hard to make something similar on your own. By this, we mean that you could simple rearrange some LED lighting, or suspended lighting, to give a similar effect that these handmade pieces of art.

The Amazing LED Lighting Jellyfish

Two years in the making, the creative product of over eighty people and five thousand person-hours, Jellyfish 12,000 has arrived and continues to evolve. Over 4,800 computer-controlled LED lights form a giant, 8-foot dome-shaped display. We have sound-reactive animations and a new touchscreen interface allowing realtime control of the dome. 3,000 watts of power and a concert-ready sound system.

How to describe a time-travelling jellyfish? 9,500 pounds of welded steel and concealed vehicle base, 12′6” tall, 18′ long, 15′ wide. Two computers, one microcontroller, over 4800 individually addressable LEDs, 617 circuit boards, one mile of copper cable. Wrap-around bench seating on the lower level, and an upper level that allows viewing the animations from the inside out. A sound system that puts the oomph into any party, and a quiet on-board power source. And it moves, carrying up to 17 passengers at a time.

Yves Behar and Samsung – An Abstract Way of Looking at LED Technology

with the opening of the new modern wing at the chicago art institute, yves béhar is presenting the commissioned ‘anima terra’, a sculptural landscape internally illuminated by LED’s. this work is a collaboration with samsung, and the latest in a series of laboratory projects. as a continuation of his experimental lighting work using LED’s, ‘anima terra’ (latin for living earth, or living landscape), is a sculptural topographic surface made of thin layers of formed metal that are individually and invisibly lit from within to enable a range of
inner lighting expressions. these expressions are inspired by natural phenomena, like the changing light from dawn to dusk.

like a living landscape that changes over time, ‘anima terra’ uses LED technology to evoke and celebrate the animating ‘inner glow’ – both natural and artificial – that is everywhere in the world around us.
