The ETFE membrane covering the National Aquatics Center (nicknamed the “Water Cube”) can “change” colors in a magical way, said the chief of the venue’s operation company.
The secret lies in the LED lighting devices installed in the ETFE (Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene) air pillows of the venue.
Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are solid-state devices that convert electric energy directly into light. They have a longer lifespan and are easy to integrate, energy-saving and environment-friendly. They also have a full color presentation.
Compared with conventional fluorescent lamps, lamps illuminated by LED technology can result in as much as 60 percent in energy savings and have a much longer life span of over 50,000 hours. In addition, they do not contain mercury or emit ultraviolet rays. Through custom-made lenses, their light beams can be re-deployed to reach various parts of the luminous flux curve.
